Meet Stanley Yuen – Team Manager of Statistical Programmers at SimulStat.
As a Team Manager of our Statistical Programmers, Stanley is an excellent example of the expertise we strive for at SimulStat. He joined the team in October of 2011 and has been an important asset to the company since day one. The bulk of his projects involve the various stages of statistical programming, including developing Study Data Tabulation Model (SDTMs), Analysis Data Models (ADaMs), and generating the output deliverables for clients. “I serve as the ongoing liaison between the project team and the client while facilitating the completion of the statistical programming work,” explains Stanley.
Our mission at SimulStat is to provide our clients with biostatistics and statistical programming services, which are accurate, timely, value-added, and flexible. It’s our job to help our clients develop and improve their processes to ensure that it produces accurate, reproducible, validated and well-documented results. Sometimes these projects can be quite challenging as our many customers have tight timelines and project requirements can change. Therefore, we have designed our organization to be nimble with the ability to respond quickly. Stanley explains one major challenge that comes up occasionally in projects is generating unique figures. “In our role as statistical programmers, we have to ensure that the graphs we create display all of the information correctly while also meeting the expectations of the client.”
Stanley educated and experienced background helps him rise to project challenges. He graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics along with a Master’s degree in Biostatistics. After he graduated, he worked in various healthcare related industries including Medical Devices, Pharmaceuticals, CRO’s, and Health Insurance. “Based on my background, I feel I have a diverse variety of experience in a lot of different areas in the healthcare industry.”
The biostatistics and statistical programming industry is challenging and ever-changing. Our team has many years of experience with the most recent regulatory guidelines. We have participated in numerous, successful regulatory filings and we stay up-to-date through continuing education. Stanley insists it is important to have a consistent daily schedule with a set of daily tasks to complete to ensure productivity. “We have a fairly sedentary occupation so it’s important to find time away from the desk to take care of our health.” With that said, it is also a very challenging and rewarding industry. “I love the flexibility that my job provides. The work is challenging and there’s always something new to learn. We have a great team of workers that contribute new ideas and approaches to the work. Being a Southern California resident, probably the best part of working remotely is avoiding the battlefield that is rush-hour traffic,” Stanley explains.
As a successful leader in the industry and employee of SimulStat, Stanley has insightful input based on his years of experience. The advice he gives to everyone looking for a career in the industry is to “keep informed as to the latest trends going on within the industry, whether it’s new FDA guidelines, CDISC standards, or new features to the SAS system. There are numerous online resources available to take advantage of in your career education. Don’t be afraid to ask others questions in regards to SAS programming; you’ll find that statistical programmers are helpful and friendly!”
